One of the most aggressive, natural-born cavalry leaders to emerge from the American Civil War was Nathan Bedford Forrest, the man who U.S. Grant referred to as ‘that Devil Forrest’. Rendered here in a modern, large, gold washed wooden frame is a uniformed, chest-high view of the southern cavalry general. Frame measures 29” high x 25” wide and is lightly decorated with raised filigree appliques of ornate corners and beading. The oil painting rests on specially treated, raw canvas fabric that has been stretched and mounted tightly to a 24” high x 20” wide wood frame.

In this fine, original, oil-on-canvas impression, the artist captures the vivid intensity and the steely determination that so often described Nathan Bedford Forrest, both on the battlefield and off. This no-nonsense, self-taught cavalry leader with no formal military training faces the viewer and is resplendent in a new, dress gray, double-breasted frock coat of a Confederate general officer. His oval, gold bullion starred, collar rank tab and the two vertical rows of brass buttons in columns of three present a pleasing contrast to his medium gray colored coat. Forrest’s thick crop of dark coal-gray hair streaked with white, frames a wide forehead, penetrating eyes, high cheek bones, and a dark brown colored chin beard (goatee).

The oil-on-canvas image, 21”x 16¾”, is set behind a large, gold washed wood panel with an oval opening 23” high by 19” wide and focused the viewer’s look to the general. Backside of the frame is complete and ready to hang on the wall. A small, printed card about the general’s wartime service is included with this unique and original, oil-on-canvas of Civil War cavalry general, Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Bob Wilson, Sr. is an accomplished artist with over forty years of experience. Following a career in the Army Air Corps and Air Force, during which he flew transport planes in WWII and Korea, he seriously turned to painting for a career. Completely self-taught, his talent as a painter came as naturally as his talent at flying. Bob is completely at ease in any medium. He developed an interest in historical paintings and as a Bicentennial project, completed a series of painting depicting the role of South Carolina in the Revolutionary War including famous battles and leaders of both the British and American soldiers. His paintings of the Battle of Cowpens and the Battle of Kings Mountain, done in oil on canvas and measuring 7 feet high by 15 feet long, are on display in the State House in Columbia, South Carolina. Other works are on display at the Santee State Park in Moncks Corner, SC and in the Ninety-Six National Historic Site. Bob also delved into the Civil War era and produced a series of collectors prints depicting leaders and battles of that war. One of his crowning achievements was a series of eleven religious paintings that depicted the last few days of Jesus Christ, from the condemnation by Pontius Pilot to the Resurrection, which are currently on display in Earl Owensby's religious museum in Shelby, N.C.
