Among officers listed is Colonel Charles W. Tilden, 16th Maine Vols, captured at Gettysburg, who later managed the feat of escaping from Libby. Presented to the State of Rhode Island, By E.E. Brownell, B.E.E., Philadelphia, PA, 1933. Lithographer: Uhrgott Forbriger & Co., Cincinnati, OH.
Broadside measures 27.75 x 35.5”, mounted in attractive contemporary black wooden frame, 30.5 x 38”, with manila card and paper backing & hang-wire. Officer’s names appear in cursive script, alphabetically by rank, arranged in a large oval beneath a spread eagle. Each corner features a prison vignette - “Front View of Libby Prison”, “Belle Island, Richmond VA.”, “Castle Thunder, Richmond VA.”, “A Scene in Libby.” The oval inner edge is trimmed round with a list of all Union states that had prisoners at Libby, with an appropriate engagement. Army prisoners are arranged above, in descending rank, naval officers below; the army listing includes two Brigadiers: Neal Dow, 1st Brigade, 2nd Div., 19th A.C.—E.P. Scammon, 3rd. Div., Dept of West Virgina. Colonel Tilden of the 16th Maine, captured at Gettysburg, was one of fourteen colonels incarcerated at Libby, and the only one to escape.
In condition, the piece is slightly yellowed and soiled with two minor water stains in upper corner margin, which do not impinge on the broadside proper. The names of seven Rhode Island Officers—[six lieutenants, one captain]—have been lightly and unobtrusively underlined in faded red ink. The broadside is entirely legible and highly attractive. In all, a stunning piece, superb collectible.
Extra shipping required: $40.00 east of the Mississippi, $60 west of the Mississippi for insured UPS ground.
