Original period handbill/broadside measuring 10 1/4" x 14 1/2", dated Headquarters of the Army of Potomac, Sharpsburg, Sept. 27, 1862, shortly after the Union victory at the Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg). A reprinting of a personal letter written directly to Gen. Curtin from Genl. McClellan in appreciation: "Governor: I beg leave to avail myself of almost the first moment of leisure I have had since the recent battles, to tender to you my thanks for your wise and energetic action in calling out the militia of Pennsylvania for its defence when threatened by a numerous and victorious army of the enemy....In the name of my army and for muysel, I again tender to you our acknowledgments for your patriotic course; the manner in which the people of Pennsylvania responded to your call and hastened to the defence of their frontier, no doubt exercised a great influence upon the enemy."

Light scattered soiling. Old repairs along horizontal crease approx. 2" from the bottom edge. Some paper loss in spots along left margin gives the paper a "thinned out" appearance. Problems detract very minimally from overall appearance.
