One of the most timely broadsides we've seen at The Horse Soldier!
Post-Civil War broadside featuring an evening of entertainment provided by notorious Civil War spy, Frank M. Ellis. Framed & matted in a 14 1/4" x 29" modern frame.
Ellis was hired by the Pinkerton agency during the war and became a spy for the south, as well as a war profiteer. He was a man of questionable character and though he was tried as a spy, the evidence was thin, and he was sent back to New York state on a pledge not to leave the state for the duration of the war. His appearance at a town hall appears to continue his efforts to cash in on his exploits. He promises to provide, among other things, "AMAZING EXPOSITIONS / MYSTERIOUS UNFOLDINGS / MARVELOUS RIDDLINGS / ASTOUNDING CONJURATIONS / ELECTRIFYING DIVULGEMENTS / STRATEGICAL BEWILDERMENTS"...just to name a few! And all for just 25 cents.
Printed by J. H. Benham, Steam Printer, cor. Church and Chapel Streets, New Haven, Conn. In very fine condition with light scattered soiling, and minor creasing throughout.
