This is the standard often encountered eagle masthead discharge given to a soldier at the time of his discharge from the Army. This particular document is for Emanuel Ditzler of Battery I, Pennsylvania Light Artillery.  This document was given to Ditzler at Philadelphia on June 23, 1865 when he was discharged from the service of the United States.

The document is pre-printed and filled in with ink that is clear and legible. There are five faint horizontal and three vertical fold lines. The document is clean and free of stains or foxing.

Emanuel Ditzler was born in 1844. He was living in Lancaster when he first enlistd as a Private in Company I, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry on August 11, 1862. He saw service at Chancellorsville and was discharged on May 15, 1863.

Ditzler enlisted for the second time in Battery I, Pennsylvania Light Artillery under Captain Robert J. Nevin on January 15, 1864. The battery was assigned to the Defenses of Washington and was assigned to Forts Whipple and Worth. On March 13, 1865 Ditzler was promoted to Artificer. Unpon the close of the war the battery moved to Philadelphia where Ditzler received this discharge document. He died in 1924 and is listed as being buried in Cornwall Cemetery, Cornwall, Pennsylvania.
