Standard discharge for Sgt. Henry Weddle, Co. A, 1st West Virginia Infantry. Overall condition is faded and stained from being previously housed in a period frame with a wooden shingle for backing. Found lying across the bottom of the matte was a large cluster of blue silk flag remnants, the most spectacular part of which was that a remnant of the original gold paint lettering that listed the regiment’s battle honors is still visible. A brief search regarding the 1st West Virginia’s flag indicates that they received a new battle flag in early 1865, so it seems very possible that tatters of the original flag made it home with the boys upon their discharges in late 1864. Both items are now housed in a 13 ¼” x 19 ½” wooden frame with glass on both sides.
Discharge has a large oval stamp from the paymaster at upper right and round impressed stamp showing seated justice with scales, sword and shield with “CIRCUIT COURT, OHIO COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA” around the outer edge. It is dated November 26, 1864. Reverse indicates that Weddle was from Wheeling, WV and enlisted on 9/20/61 for a 3 year term of service; the date given here is November 29, 1864. Weddle’s name is misspelled as “Wedde” throughout the document.
Not much additional information could be found about Weddle’s service, except for the following which was taken from compiled records from the Adj. General of West Virginia in the following format
Name--Age; Height; Complexion; Eyes; Hair; Birthplace; Occupation; Date of Enlistment; Place of Enlistment; Rank; Remarks
Weddle, Henry--21; 5 9+"; dark; blue; black; Triadelphia, VA; iron worker; 9/9/1861; Camp Carlile, VA; Sgt.; *
Note that there was also a Jacob Weddle from Triadelphia who served in the same regiment. He was a 1st Lt. in Co. E and later became captain of Co. A. Jacob was eventually promoted to major and then Lt. Col. of the regiment.
