Standard “To all Whom it may Concern” government form, 8.5 x 11”. Records Pvt. Wentworth’s enlistment—1/1/1864 (original enlistment 9/7/1861)—and discharge—8/28/ 1865. Vital statistics as follows: Born, Sanford, Maine; Age, 26 ; Complexion, Sandy ; Eyes, blue; Height, 5’ 5 1/2; Hair, Dark; Occupation, Blacksmith. Exhibits light yellowing, while remaining entirely legible.

Online research info indicates Wentworth was discharged for disability; following the war he was a member of GAR Posts #5 in Lynn, MA and #48 in Ayer, MA. Wentworth died on 11/25/1908.

Pvt. Wentworth’s unit, the 8th Maine Infantry, was organized in September 1861, and attached to the 10th Corps, participating in Sherman’s South Carolina Expedition, participating in the capture of Ft. Pulaski, and thereafter attached to the 10th Corps operating in the Carolinas, later engaged in 1863 operations against Charleston. Later transferred to the 18th Corps, with Butler’s Army of the James, engaged at Bermuda One Hundred, and at Cold Harbor, June 1864, and present at the Battle of the Crater, during the Siege of Petersburg. Transferred to the 24th Corps, the regiment joined in the pursuit of Lee and was present at his surrender at Appomattox. Mustered out at Fortress Monroe in January 1866, during service the unit lost 134 killed and mortally wounded and 243 men by disease for a total of 383.
