Two pen & ink documents for and about J. K. Gittleman, a blacksmith and farrier in the 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The first is dated June 13, 1865, and certifies that he has been mustered and paid. The second is dated June 14, 1865, and is a reference to his being a good Blacksmith for “the past two years”. The two documents are clear and easy to read…an accompanying envelope is somewhat soiled.
John J.K. Gittleman was a resident of Lebanon County, PA when he enlisted on 9/19/62 as a Farrier. On that date he mustered into Co. E, 17th PA Cavalry. Mustered out on 6/16/65 at Washington, D.C.
The June 14 document is signed by Captain William Tice, who enlisted on 10/27/62 and was commissioned into Co. E, 17th PA Cav. Wounded 5/30/64 at Old Church Tavern, VA. Discharged on 6/20/65.
No definite info was found on Capt. & Acting Chief QM J B Wheeler, whose signature is on the June 13 document. [jet, ld]
