Dated "Camp 1st N.Y. Engineers / 7 Miles from Richmond, VA / Sunday, Oct 2nd, 1864". This articulate letter, directed to his parents, describes Rebels attacking their camp and meeting General Butler; his well written style transports the reader back to the time and place of the event. "Marched till 10 a.m. and came onto ground occupied in the morning by the 'johnnies' but now occupied by us...our men charged on another of the battereis...we stood where we could see the charge...it was most terrific...one shell burst...just over our heads."
A search of online Civil War databases did not reveal any definite information about Hotchkins, though a "William Haskiss" is listed as serving in Co. E, 1st New York Engineers; written on the cover included with the letter are instructions to direct his mail to that company and regiment. 'Haskiss' record indicates he was 21 years old when he enlisted on 8/30/64 at Norwich, NY as a Private. On that date he mustered into Co. E, 1st NY Engineers. Promoted to Artificer, 11/1/64. Mustered out 6/30/65 at Richmond, VA. Further research to confirm this ID certainly a possibility.
