Vol. VIII—No. 417. 16 pp. [817-832]. Four columns, with numerous stories, illustrations and cartoons. Front cover features an oval portrait of newly appointed Chief Justice Chase, surrounded by vignettes of earlier chief justices—John Jay, Oliver Ellsworth, John Marshall and Roger B. Taney, whom Chase had succeeded. Interior illustrations include full page montage of all stations on Grant’s Military Railroad from City Point, VA, to Patrick’s Stations on his extreme left flank. Also a spectacular center page foldout montage of scenes depicting “The Effects [debilitating] of the Rebellion on the Homes of Virginia.” Plus, a pair of sketches showing rebel guerrilla depredations—“Seizing Horses”, [Highway robbery]—“Your Money or Your Life”. This issue was published just as Gen. Sherman was seizing Savannah, GA., and concluding his famed “March to the Sea.”

Exhibits mount dots and light chipping along left margin, and faint fold-lines. Else VG, w/highly impressive front cover. Solid collectible. In protective sleeve, w/white card backing.    [jp]
