VOL. XXIX/NO. 19/WHOLE NO. 1592.—BOSTON. 4 pp., 6 columns, measuring 18 x 24.5”. Slight soiling of cover page, w/light chipping of upper margin and the center fold-mark. Small internal tears neatly mended w/archival tape. Inked signature “Capt. W. Bradford” appears in upper right margin above masthead. Else VG-, and entirely legible.
This famed abolitionist periodical was edited by the William Lloyd Garrison, with masthead credo: “No Union With Slaveholders---the United States Constitution is a covenant with death, and an agreement with hell.” This particular issue appeared five months before John Brown’s abolitionist raid on the Harper’s Ferry, VA, armory.
The right cover column [“Refuge of Oppression”] laments the announcement that the Ohio supreme court denied of a writ of habeas corpus in Ex Parte Bushnell—a case involving the arrest of abolitionist Simon Bushnell for obstructing a Mississippi slave owner from recapturing a runaway slave in the free territory of Ohio. [Though the slave escaped, Bushnell would be sentenced to serve 60 days in the Cuyahoga County Jail for being in violation the federal fugitive slave act].
Other front selections include “ A Slave Girl’s Narrative”, and a piece treating the “Persecution of the Methodists by the Democrats of Texas.” The Liberator supported other liberal causes, and its letters to the editor contains protests against capital punishment, and bible reading public schools. [Concerning the former, the letter predicts “The Milwaukee Free Democrats think the work of deliberately suspending men by the neck will never be resumed in that State.”]
