NO. 358/ VOL. XIV.  16pp. [305-320] This issue appeared as Army of the Potomac was hunkered at Harrison’s Landing,VA, under the cover of Union gunboats, at the conclusion of McClellan’s failed Peninsula campaign. The front cover  illustration—[“Morgan’s Raid into Ohio]--depicts a mob of Kentuckians agitated by news of the capture of Cynthiana by “the rebel Morgan and his guerrillas.” [John Morgan’s forces were a one of part of the rebel wave  moving into Kentucky, that would crest in defeat at the Battle Perryville.]

Other illustrations include a scene of a U.S. Mail boat docking at Harrison’s Landing, VA., and a sketch of “California Joe”, the celebrated sharpshooter of Berdan’s Regiment. Also a double page spread depicting the rebel ram “Arkansas” against the Union gunboat Carondelet at the mouth of the Yazoo River. Plus two pages of intriguing sketches explaining the methods of managing the Union 13 inch shell mortar.

Editorially, the magazine lashes out at Great Britain for recognizing  “the rebels as ‘belligerents’ entitled to equal consideration  with the government of the United States, and  for “supplying them with munitions of war, and in general acts of sympathy and encouragement towards them.”  If, as a consequence,  the English manufacturing districts are being blighted by the dearth of  blockaded southern cotton, so be it. The responsibility lies with  those whom  hostility to republicanism and jealousy and hatred of the United States have betrayed into a policy of sympathy of with the rebellion.”

In terms of condition, the magazine is lightly yellowed, and slight chipped at the extremities. Else VG to fine. Excellent collectible.
