IX/ NO. 421. 16pp. [33-48] This issue appeared after that capture of Fort Fisher, at Wilmington, NC, while Sherman’s army was in the initial phases of its march from Savannah up through the Carolinas. The front cover features a dramatic lithograph "View of General Butler’s Dutch Gap Canal Before the Explosion of the Bulkhead," accompanied by an article explaining Butler’s effort in digging to shorten the James River for Union traffic.
Other illustrations include a double page spread of "Views In and Around Savannah" and a humorous depiction of Union army "journalists" put out the first number of the "Loyal Georgian". Also lithographs of Admiral Porter’s fleet at Wilmington during the Ft. Fisher Expedition.
In terms of condition, the magazine is slightly yellowed, w/detached front cover & lightly chipped lower right corner. Else VG plus. Good war-time Harper’s Weekly.
