VOL. 1, NO. 32—PORT ROYAL, S.C. 4pp. with columns, measuring 12.5 x 10”. Slightly yellowed w/some water-staining & chipping along right margins. Else good & entirely legible.
Port Royal Sound and the harbor town of Port Royal, SC, were captured by a Federal amphibious assault on November 7, 1861. This newspaper, “The New South”, published by Jos. Sears, became the new town paper with a Union voice. This April 11, 1863 issue was published as federal forces in the south Atlantic were gearing up for an assault on Charleston, via amphibious operations against James Island and environs. It is chock full much army news, including mention of the recent federal Florida expedition, and the Yazoo expedition in Mississippi, as well as depredations of the CSS Alabama, commanded by Capt. Raphael Semmes.
Also contains a cryptic notice that….”It is barely possible that The New South may be suspended for a week or two, on account of the many changes going in the Department, in which case, we hope soon again to great our readers, under more pleasant circumstances.” An unusual southern “Union” newspaper. Excellent collectible.
