Vol. 17 / No. 4. 8 pp., 6 columns, measuring 15.75 x 22”. Exhibits slight yellowing, with some darkening along the front page upper, center-vertical fold-line. Also light chipping of interior outer margins. With tiny yellow name sticker in upper margin above masthead [“Rev. Dr. S.W. Crawford/ 13 Aug 62”] Else VG, and entirely legible.

This Chambersburg, PA, weekly paper appeared 19 days after Battle of Gettysburg, at a time when coverage of the Great Draft Riot in New York City overshadowed new from the war front. With the following front page headlines:

“Great Riot in New York! Resistance to Conscription! Three Days Incessant Rioting! Houses Sacked and Destroyed! The Military Called Out!! They Fire on the Mob with Terrible Effect - Many Killed and Wounded! Col. Jordan and A Number of Privates Killed and Wounded!
