This issue came to press a mere six weeks after the firing of Ft. Sumter, and the news reflects the opening phase of the war. Left margin headlines include the following: “Reported Advance of the Federal Forces to Fairfax Court House; A General Servile Insurrection Anticipated; Seditious Demonstration in Baltimore.” Also “An Army Officer’s Report of Affairs in the South; News From Fortress Monroe-—Arrival of Four Hundred Fifty Fugitive Slaves; The Blockade: the Case of the Bark Winnifred, of Richmond.”
