This 5.00 x 4.00 inch piece of paper is signed in ink “D. R. CLENDENIN, LT.COL. 8TH ILL. CAV. + BVT. COL. U.S.V. MIL COM ROOM, WASHINGTON ARSENAL, JUNE 13TH 1865.”
Inscription is strong and the paper is in good condition with just a small area of discoloration along one edge.
David Ramsay Clendenin was born June 24, 1830 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois in 1854. On September 18, 1861 he left his job teaching to take a commission as Major of the 8th Illinois Cavalry. Clendenin was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on December 5, 1862 and Colonel by brevet on February 20, 1865 and finally brevet Brigadier General on July 11, 1865. He served on the commission that tried the Lincoln conspirators and remained in the Regular Army after the end of the conflict retiring in 1891 with the rank of Colonel. He died on March 5, 1895 and is buried in Oneida Cemetery in Oneida, Illinois.
