Item Code: L14663

Written entirely in his hand and dated July 5th, 1886, this document is a bank check made payable to H. Yingling for $39.58, on the Bank of the Metropolis of New York City. This pre-printed stationary for the Gettysburg Springs Hotel also indicates that H. Yingling was the proprietor of that establishment. Document measures 8” x 4 7/8”. Fold lines, two punch holes, minor wear to edges and some ink smudges, including through a portion of Sickles signature; otherwise in fine condition. Attractive matted & framed, with brass nameplate at bottom.

General Sickles visited the battlefield in early July of 1886 to take part in the 23rd anniversary commemoration of the battle, and to visit with the veterans of his Union Third Corps in what was described as the largest reunion held up to that date. He basked in the limelight as attention was given to his remarks about his controversial movement of the Third Corps line on July 2, 1863, where he spoke publicly about his belief that by moving his men forward to the Peach Orchard he saved the day and was responsible for much of the victory. His talent for stretching the truth led to a renewal of the rift between those who supported Sickles and those who favored the now deceased Gen. Meade’s version of events during the battle.
