Lew Wallace was a multi-talented Hoosier who lead several careers, and is generally best known as the author of the 19th century blockbuster novel: BEN HUR, A TALE OF CHRISTIANITY. On the military side, he served as a Lieutenant in the Mexican War, and later as Indiana state adjutant general on the eve of war. Taking command of the 11th Indiana Infantry Wallace moved quickly to brigade and divisional command, and had command of Grant’s 3 Division at Crump’s Landing on the eve of Shiloh. A communication miscue concerning the road taken by Wallace to join besieged Grant’s forces caused his late arrival on the field at the end of the first day. This controversy cost Wallace further chance at serious command, but he did recoup he reputation by holding Gen. Jubal Early’s forces at Monocacy in the summer of 1864. In 1865 he was a member of the military commission that tried the Lincoln conspirators, and was president of the court-martial that tried and condemned Henry Wirz , commandant at Andersonville. Wallace later served as Governor of the New Mexico in 1880-81 during the “Lincoln County War” in which Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid were major figures. In all, Wallace led a highly interesting life and was one of Indiana’s most interesting Hoosier. Handsome Hoosier collectible.  [JP]
