“Extract from the Class Reports and Conduct Roll of the U.S. Naval Academy, for the Month of January 1854 furnished for the information of Parents and Guardians,” for midshipman R. Sutherland, of the 4th Class (and “Composed of 42 members”).
The document records Sutherland’s scores in Arithmetic, Grammar, and Geography, and notes having received 12 demerits for the month, (and a total of 74 demerits for the academic year to date).
Hamersly, Complete General Navy Register, 1776 to 1887 (1888) records a Robert Sutherland as having entered the Naval Academy as a midshipman in May, 1852, and notes that he “Resigned.” (at p. 815).
Document measures 8” x 9 ¾” on blue paper; pre-printed Naval Academy stationary filled out in ink. Overall fine condition; fold lines, one small fold line tear, slight age yellowing along margins. Folded and mailed; postmarked twice on reverse - Annapolis, MD and Hudson, NY. Addressed to Josiah Sutherland, Attorney at Law, Hudson, NY.
