In ink, mounted on white card, 5 x 2.75”. Exhibits one tiny chip along upper margin. Else VG, and crisply legible. Inscription signature (neatly clipped from letter): “Very Truly your friend/ yours W Field”.
Cyrus W. Field, 1819-1892, was the prominent New York businessman who formed the American Telegraph Company and was responsible of the laying the Atlantic cable in 1858, which was inaugurated with a message from Queen Victoria to President Buchanan. The cable soon broke but was repaired and restored in permanence by Field in 1866. Solid autograph collectible. [jp]
