1 page, 3.75 x 5.25”, on lined paper in ink. Text:

“Send me 1 sett Surgl Hist of War/ R.B. Vance”

Robert Brooke Vance was an elder brother of North Carolina governor who became Colonel of the 29th North Carolina Infantry. He and his regiment joined Gen. Kirby Smith in the defense of the Cumberland Gap, and Vance was advanced to Brigade command, before becoming ill with typhoid. Promoted to brigadier general, he was assigned duty in western North Carolina. Captured at Crosby Creek, he was released on parole in March 1865. Following the war he served six term in the House of Representatives [1873-85], followed by four years as assistant commissioner of patents. He died in 1899 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Ashville, NC.

On the reverse of Vance’s request is the notation: “R.B. Vance/ filed”. Inasmuch as the five volume medical and surgical history of the Civil War was published between 1870 and 1888, it is likely that Vance’s request dates from the late 1880s.

Good off-beat piece for Confederate autograph collectors.  [jp]
