Modern frame meas. approx. 8.75 x 13.50 inches. Frame contains a double mat of gray over brown.

At top is a full standing copy photo of Cutler in the uniform of a brigadier general. At bottom is a slip of paper that meas. approx. 2.50 x 1.25 that reads “L CUTLER, BRIG. GENL. COMDG 2 BRIGADE.” Signature is done in strong period ink.

Lysander Cutler was born February 16,1807. He was a successful businessman and a former State Senator in Maine.

In 1861, Cutler was commissioned colonel of the 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry which eventually formed part of the famous "Iron Brigade" in the 1st Corps of the Army of the Potomac. The regiment saw significant action at 1st Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg. He was promoted brigadier general in the November 1862 and given command of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division I Corps which he led at the Battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg in 1863. In March 1864, he was given command of the 1st Brigade, 4th Division, V Corps and led it in the Battle of the Wilderness. During the Overland Campaign, at the Siege of Petersburg Cutler was brevetted major general of US Volunteers on August 5, 1864.

At the Battle of Globe Tavern on August 21, 1864, he was seriously wounded. He spent the remainder of the war as an administrator and resigned from the Army in June 1865.

Cutler died of a stroke, due to complications from his war injuries on July 30, 1866 and is buried in Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.   [ad]
