This is a single vellum sheet, partially printed and accomplished by hand with the blue seal. With engraved American eagle vignettes on both the top and the bottom. It measures 15- 1/4 by 19 inches.
This Lincoln document, boldly signed, appointing Charles A. Allegood as a Military Storekeeper in the Ordnance Department on March 27th, 1861. Secretary of War Simon Cameron also signs the document.
The document has strong creases where it was folded into 15 sections but Lincoln’s signature is just above the bottom horizontal fold.
After Charles Alexander Alligood, spelled correctly with an I, was commissioned as a Storekeeper in the Ordnance Department, he was appointed as a Storekeeper in the regular army on September 19th, 1861 where he served for the duration of the Civil War. After the war he remained in the Army and was promoted to Captain in the Quartermasters Department in 1866. He remained in the army until his death in 1890. His post Civil War postings include Fort Leavenworth, Fort Monroe, Fort McHenry and Fort Wadsworth.
