MINT M1842 SOCKET BAYONET AND SCABBARD

Item Code: 490-1630

A mint condition socket bayonet and scabbard for the 1842 musket and rifled musket. The bayonet is “in the bright” and would be perfect for that mint musket or a collection of “as issued” accoutrements. The locking ring turns freely and the US stamp is crisp. I see only a light few gray spots near base of the blade. Collectors sometimes get fooled by bayonets that have been polished up recently. Finding one that retains its original brightness after 150 years is no easy task. This one comes with its equally hard to find mint condition scabbard. The scabbard body is full length, intact, with its original finish, showing no flaking, creases, bends or mended breaks. The brass tip is in place and secure, and shows just a little staining that could clean. The belt frog is buff leather, secured with stitching and eight rivets, and retains much of its original black color, which usually oxidizes to brown. It would look great on a mint buff waist belt.

We sometimes forget that the 1842 muskets, both smooth bore and the rifled versions, were used throughout the war. In mid-1864 Lincoln called for an additional 500,000 troops and the government even issued new contracts for 1864 pattern cartridge boxes for .69 caliber rifle rounds. This is great condition set.   [SR]
