The Remington rolling block rifle and carbine were popular weapons with foreign governments. In 1899-1900 Mexico purchased about 14,700 of them, a little over half of which were rifles taking a bayonet. These were the Remington No. 5 rolling block rifles in 7 mm. caliber. Remington also designated them as the Model 1897 military rifle. The bayonet is knife bayonet with 8 ¼ inch blade, wood grips and hooked guard. The crossguard is stamped “Republica Mexicana.” The reverse of the blade is stamped in the fuller: “Remington Arms. Co. Ilion, N.Y.”

The blade is smooth, with no rust or pitting, but a mix of light and dark gray overall and with a tiny portion of the very tip missing. The black leather scabbard has a steel tip with some brown spots and a slight dent on the face. There is an integral leather loop at the top of the scabbard with a brass wire double ended hook for belt loops or grommets. The scabbard has a repaired break an inch or so above the tip.  The wood grips are solid, but show some deep scratches and a partial set of initials. There is small piece of tape with the letter N at the base of the blade, likely a collector’s label. [sr]
