The New Jersey company of Hewes and Phillips altered to percussion some 20,000 flintlock muskets of the 1816 and 1840 patterns for the state of New Jersey and for the U.S. government from 1861 to 1862. Hardin, The American Bayonet, calls them the “U.S. Musket, Model 1862 (H&P Conversion.)” The blade is the standard Civil War 1855 style, longer and thinner than the original 1816 pattern bayonet blades, but the bayonet preserves the 1816 style socket with its characteristic T-shaped mortise making it suitable for issue with the H&P muskets and also for use as a replacement bayonet for other U.S. 1816 muskets. Often confused with the 1850s Remington conversion bayonets, and they are interchangeable, the H&P has a slightly longer blade according to Hardin.

This one has a good edge and point and is a mix of deep gray, with some brown on the upper surface and rubbing at the muzzle, bringing it to a lighter silver gray.  [SR]
