This Federal accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet made for the US Model 1816 Flintlock Musket. This bayonet was the first American bayonet to include a uniformly ground flute and the first type to employ the “T” mortise in the socket. Triangular blade exhibits spur shape with no clasping ring on the socket. Overall, 19 inches long, 15 ¾ inch blade. Stamped into the flat shank “US/EB”; below these marks are the letters “S/L”. Blade and socket semi-bright with minor age spots. Nice example! [ws]
