The bolo knife was intended for use by engineers, machine gun crews and hospital corpsmen who might also have to clear brush, improvise stretchers, etc.  The 1910 pattern was an improvement upon the Model 1909 and is descended from earlier hospital corps knives. Measuring about 15 inches overall, with a 10 ½ inch blade, this example has obverse ricasso stamped “US” over the serial number “22774.” The reverse has the “SA” and ordnance bomb of the Springfield Armory stamped over the date, “1912.”

The walnut grips are very good, showing a few minor dents and abrasions on the reverse near the pommel, but generally with crisply delineated grooves and ridges. The pommel is very good. The guard shows a few dings on the edges, but matches the pommel in color. Both guard and pommel were generally blued, as was the first quarter inch of the blade. The scabbard catch is in place.

The blade rates very good, with excellent edge and point, generally smooth gray metal with just some scattered darker gray age spots. The scabbard is the correct first model with with olive drab webbing over a wood body with leather tip. The leather shows just minor rubs and could be dressed up. The belt hook is in place as well as the hook to engage the latch on the bolo grip. The scabbard is unmarked.

This is a very nice example of a Pre-World War One U.S. Army bolo knife. [sr]
