Presented here, in excellent condition, is an original, US Model 1855 buff leather socket bayonet scabbard. These scabbards were made to hold the angular socket bayonets that attached to the .58 caliber rifle muskets during the Civil War. The term ‘angular socket bayonet’ refers to the three-bladed type used by infantry soldiers. The fine leather scabbard, with its black leather frog with eight-copper rivets and tapered brass tip, is complete and in remarkable condition. Scabbard body is strong and has no inspector’s stamp or maker’s mark. Angular leather body has no cracking, tearing or weak areas anywhere. The undented, brass scabbard tip is tight to the body and retains most of its original sheen.
