Item Code: 701-44

This Model 1860 cavalry officer’s saber was one of those imported military edged weapons from Prussia used by U.S. mounted forces during the Civil War. The slightly curved steel blade has a flat wide back and is single-edged with a slight false edge. Saber measures a total of 36¾” long, has a 31” blade with a 23” wide stopped fuller and a narrow fuller 13” long. Obverse ricasso shows the Solingen family mark of Gebruder Weyersberg of the King’s head with a five-point crown. Reverse ricasso has no markings. Steel blade displays both military and floral etching on both flats that extend from the ricasso some 14” on the blade. Obverse shows an ornate “U.S.” script while the reverse has the words in script “ALWAYS READY”. All etching clear and pleasing but does show normal light wear. Blade has a dusky gray coloring and shows scattered areas of light and dark age discoloration overall along with some edge nicks.

The two-branch brass hilt, still with its leather washer, is in very good condition and exhibits a fine, untouched mellow bronze patina. Black sharkskin grips are in good condition and feature a center swelled wooden handle wrapped with double twisted brass wire flanked with single strand brass wire. Wrap is tight. Cavalry saber has a brass pommel cap in the Phrygian design. Brass hilt is uncleaned and the branches are symmetrical. Steel scabbard is unadorned and does not appear to have been cleaned. Metal surface wears a plum- brown color with scattered areas of light rust pitting visible overall. Both sword mounts are plain brass, tight and retain the suspension rings. The drag slipper shows little wear. A nice Civil War cavalry officer’s imported saber with metal scabbard in good condition at a great price.
