Imported by “Horstmann / & Sons / Philadelphia”, whose company marking appears on the obverse ricasso, just above “Kingshead” strike of blade maker Gebruder Wyersburg of Solingen, Germany. The bright, brilliantly pristine blade measures 35.75” in length, and 1.125” in width at base. Frosted with etched floral patterns & military trophies, with “E Pluribus Unum” and the Solingen eagle appearing on the obverse, “U.S.” on the reverse, and “Iron Proof’ on flat upper edge near base. Thin red felt washer present.
Gilt brass hilt assembly contains knuckle guard “U.S” and is tight and symmetrical. Exhibits light coppery patina, with slight scratching. Sharkskin grip and wrap near fine, displaying very slight wear. Lightly tarnished sword knot is strong and not frayed.
Blackened scabbard with brass fixtures is missing most of its blacking, and splotchy in spots. Displays one slight dent on the obverse below the second mount. The gilt throat, ornamented mounts, and drag are tight and display medium bright patina. Overall, a dazzling blade, and an excellent 1850 Staff and Field collectible.
