IMPORT NON-REGULATION CAVALRY OFFICER’S SABER, SOLD BY HORSTMANN

$995.00 SOLD

Item Code: E2387

The blade on this saber is approx. 34.00 inches long and is etched with scrollwork and flags with an eagle on one side and scrollwork, American flag and a large “US” on the other. The ricasso has an etched maker’s name that reads “W. H. HORSTMANN & SONS PHILADELPHIA” in three lines. Below this the ricasso is marked with a King’s head stamp which represents the blade maker, Gebruder Weyersberg of Solingen, Prussia.

The true edge of the blade is in very nice shape with one or two minor nicks that can be felt rather than seen. The etching on the blade is very pronounced and still easily visible. The blade has light scattered mottling. The markings mentioned above are strong.

The hilt is in good condition. The grip exhibits hardly any wear. The sharkskin grip is complete and in excellent condition. The wire wrap consists of nine double courses of twisted brass wire which is still tight and complete. The pommel cap, knuckle bow and back strap are of an iron that now has a light patina to it. There is an iron ferrule at the bottom of the grip just above the counterguard. The knuckle bow design is the standard cavalry style three branched guard that ends in a quillion. There is also a short reverse branch guard.

The scabbard has darkened from age. It is complete with both of the mounts, rings and drag. There are none of the usual dents and no markings.

This is a nice solid example of the everyday work sword of a Union Cavalry officer.
