Maker marked ‘H. Sauerbier, Newark, NJ” on reverse side near counter guard. Characteristic unstopped fuller runs from guard to within six inches of the tip. Semi-bright blade with crisp floral etching, scattered age spots with slight pitting near tip. Washer present. Brass hilt assembly, gilded & tight, with counterguard decorated with pierced design of interwoven floral. Fine black leather grip with characteristic Sauerbier double-edged brass wire wrap, slightly loose. Black leather scabbard in very good condition with one weak spot near the drag, but little cracking & no flaking. Henry Sauerbier of Newark produced some of the most unique swords of the Civil War. An unusual, and highly attractive piece.
