This is a fine example of the 1860 cavalry saber manufactured by Ames for the U.S. Government and Inspected by David Rice. The saber has a 34 3/4 inch long curved blade with a semi-bright finish. Only has two small dings in the blade. The obverse ricasso is marked U.S. / D.R. / 1863 and the reverse is marked Ames MFC CO / CHICKOPEE / MASS. The hilt is made of brass with two branches and the pommel dome is stamped D.R. The grip is wrapped in leather with a few spots that show wear and the brass wire is attached and tight.
Scabbard is a gun metal gray with dark age spots and some pitting on the drag. Throat is marked K and the drag is J? Ames supplied the government with 25,000 sabers in the 1863 contract.
