The Model 1840 cavalry saber, commonly referred to as “The Old Wristbreaker”, was one of the tried and true military edged weapons used by U.S. mounted forces before and during the Civil War.  This imported steel blade is curved, has a flat wide back and is single-edged with just a slight false edge. Also called a dragoon heavy cavalry saber, blade measures 33¼” long with an integral wide fuller 25” long and a narrow fuller some 13” long. Weighing 4½ lbs., including the steel scabbard, the blade on this saber is marked “G. WEYERSBERG SOHNE / SOLINGEN” on the obverse ricasso. Obverse ricasso is plain. The Gebruder Weyersberg firm in Prussia was a prominent sword making dynasty that dated back to before the 1400s.   Makers of high-quality blades, the firm survives today in varied incarnations.

The hefty steel blade is straight and exhibits just a few light scattered splotchy areas of age discoloration and pinprick rust pitting overall.  Blade has a dusky gray patina and appears to have been lightly cleaned sometime ago. Does show three minor edge nicks. The heavy, two-branch brass hilt, still with its leather washer, is in excellent condition.

Grips are strong and feature a molded, wooden handle covered with black bridle leather wrapped with a thin, double twisted brass wire wound around the handle. Leather wraps dry and exhibit areas of wear-thru and scuffing. Brass wire has slight looseness but still tight. Brass pommel cap in the Phrygian design exhibits no inspector marks. Hefty iron scabbard is unadorned and wears a dark, mottled patina with fine pinprick pitting overall. Both sword mounts are tight and retain the suspension rings.  Drag has minimal wear.

This heavy cavalry saber with its clean lines and reasonable price would compliment any edged weapon collection or cavalry display.
