This good-looking specimen is an original, imported, transition Model 1840 / 60 type, Civil War officer’s cavalry campaign-grade saber complete with its original steel metal scabbard. Manufactured by the renowned sword-making dynasty of Gebruder Weyersberg of Solingen, Prussia, the firm was a prominent, high-grade, high-quality edged weapons maker and produced some of the best sabers / swords in the world at the time.

This unusual, imported cavalry saber blade with only the King’s head mark and a 4-point crown stamped on the obverse ricasso is rarely seen. Left ricasso is blank. Imported to the U.S. by the retailer William Horstmann of Philadelphia, PA, the slightly curved, high quality steel blade was assembled, hilted, etched and sold by Horstmann Company. This excellent and original piece features both blade flats with beautifully executed, acid-etched floral décor combined with military motifs. Etching extends upwards for 15” from the ricasso on both flats. Handsome blade exhibits a pleasing, eye-catching dark and shiny polished surface. Just few areas of very light oxidation on blade which is free of edge nicks. No script letters “U.S.” as expected. Blade measures 34¾” long, 1” wide at the hilt with a 26½” long stopped fuller and 17¼” long narrow fuller. Found on the wide, flat, etched and decorated blade back is the mark “IRON PROOF.” Retains its original leather washer.

The un-embellished, uncleaned, cast brass, symmetrical two-branch hilt with the knucklebow has the Phygerian-style brass pommel cap. Grips are mint condition and employ the swelled, grooved wooden handle that is cord wrapped and then covered with dark sharkskin. A fine, double-twist, brass gilded wire rests within the grooves with each turn. Brass wire wrap is excellent, tight and strong. Pommel is high domed with a smooth, peened blade tang.

Original, imported steel, iron mounted scabbard is in very good condition and exhibits a pleasing, factory brown / plum patina overall. Has just normal scattered pitting areas and light oxidation spots. Scabbard body has two, well-placed dents near the tip to help secure the blade when it rests in the scabbard. Body retains its throat collar, upper and lower ring band, rings, narrow mounts and the drag. Mounts are tight and strong, as are the 1” brass rings. Has its two small, brass screws at the throat. Upper ring mount shows wear indicative of this saber being belted and worn by the horseman. Drag slipper shows much angle wear.

This imported, Weyersberg-manufactured M1860 cavalry officer’s saber with matching scabbard is a quality Civil War officer’s saber specimen most worthy of any Civil War display or collection.
