Item Code: 801-487

This original Model 1850 Officer’s Staff and Field sword, complete with its leather scabbard, was produced by the Prussian firm of W. Clauberg, a sword maker of high-grade, high-quality edged weapons.

Of the type carried by many higher-ranking Federal officers during the Civil War, this quality steel edged weapon measures a total length of almost 37.70 inches from point to pommel. The fine steel blade is 32.00 inches long and carries a 13.00 inch narrow fuller and a 20.50 inch wide stopped fuller. Blade reverse ricasso is marked “W. Clauberg” / “standing figure” / “Solingen”. Rounded blade back is etched with “IRON PROOF”. Blade edge has two or three small nicks that can be felt rather than seen. Blade is embellished with a typical acid etched design that features a military motif on both sides of the blade. This etching is light but visible on both sides. Obverse of blade is etched with a panoply of flags, then a foliate design followed by a spreadwinged eagle. Reverse starts with a panoply of flags, small foliate and runs to a “US” in ornate script capital letters. The blade has a semi-bright finish overall and has a few pinprick pitting spots near the point only. Leather washer is present

This sword specimen has a detailed, two-band, cutout, brass hilt with the guard and knucklebow cast in one piece. Upper band features prominent cutout letters “US” surrounded by fine cutout foliate. Bottom band also has an intricate, foliate cutout design. Covering the center-swelled handle is a wrap of gray sharkskin in good, tight condition overall. Thin, brass, single-twisted wire is original and except for two rows that are slightly loose, tight to the grips. Phrygian pommel cap is border-engraved in a floral pattern with stars and it is tight to the handle. The front of the pommel bears crossed US flags.

The leather scabbard is adorned with brass furniture and includes two brass mounts, rings, drag and brass throat. All brass furniture is plain and has a nice mellow patina. Scabbard body has numerous crease lines with the heaviest being below the second mount. Same area has minor surface finish loss. However, the scabbard is still strong. Both the sword bands retain the small, brass setscrew. Drag shows some wear.   [ad]
