Item Code: 172-4265

Here is an original, Civil War Ames Model 1840 light artillery saber in excellent condition overall. Termed an Ames Type 2, this saber was made from 1860 through 1865 and features a counterguard without a recess, and its matching metal scabbard has a throat mount similar to the M1860 cavalry saber.

Blade is 32 ½” long, curved, single edged with a flat top, and a single wide fuller with no narrow fuller. There is no mottling and no edge nicks. There are a few rub marks from drawing and replacing the saber in the scabbard. Obverse ricasso is faintly stamped with “1863/ D. R.” while the reverse ricasso bears the maker’s mark of “AMES MF--- /CHICOPEE / MASS” in very thin, hard to discern stamping. Original leather washer pad is strong and intact.

Pommel has a domed cap with single knucklebow. Entire brass hilt, including the pommel has acquired a nice light patina. Cross guard stamped with a small number “31.” Original grips are strong and tight. Grip consist of a turned, wooden handle with seventeen grooves wrapped with brown leather and encircled with twisted brass wire wrap. Leather is in good condition and shows light wear. Brass wire wrap is tight.

The metal scabbard exhibits a semi-bright surface overall with some moderate scattered mottling and one small push on lower third. Drag shows the government inspector initials “D.R.” The large, iron ring mounts are tight and hold the two sword suspension rings. Scabbard collar and throat are tight.

A handsome specimen of a Federal Ames Model 1840 light artillery saber.  [AD]
