This sword has a beautiful bright blade that is very clean and shows only minor amounts of scattered mottling. Blade measures 28 3/8” long and 1 1/8” wide at the ricasso. The etching on the blade is in very good to excellent condition. The obverse etching begins just above the ricasso with a perched eagle with a patriotic shield on his chest housed within a sunburst. This is followed by an anchor fouled with a chain, some delicate foliate, panoply of flags and more foliate. The reverse side etching begins with an “E PLURIBUS UNUM” riband followed by some oak leaves and the letters “USN” followed by more foliate and a flying US flag on a pole. All the etching is very strong. Leather washer at the base of the ricasso is present and complete.

Finely detailed ornate brass hilt, guard and knucklebow. Oak leaf scrolls and acanthus leaves with “USN” in panel with eaglehead quillon. Brass hilt has been lightly cleaned; very tight grip with all of its original gold gilt. Choice rayskin grip with single twisted wire. Brass pommel cap decorated with ornate scrollwork of laurel leaves and a perched American eagle, surrounded by 13 stars on top.

Leather scabbard has both mounts with knotted rope decoration and a sea serpent wrapped drag. Both rings are present. Leather body of the scabbard is strong with one minor crease below the second mount. Leather surface is crazed throughout with light scattered surface finish loss.   [AD]
