Manufactured by the Newark, New Jersey firm of Henry Sauerbier. Sword meets all the normal requirements for this sword with a few exceptions. It has a metal scabbard instead of the normally seen leather scabbard. The brass mounts with knots are standard as is the drag with the serpents on one side. The blade has some unusual etchings. The obverse side from the ricasso has a stern view of a tall ship followed by a scroll design, then an American wing spread eagle and then “E PLURIBUS  UNUM” in a riband surrounded by scroll designs. The unusual aspect of the blade etch is that “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is spelled right to left and backwards. The reverse side of the blade starts with two horse heads under a full standing view of Poseidon with trident. Also with a small deck gun, fouled anchor, and large “USN”. Hilt of sword is a little loose. Leather ricasso washer intact. Sharkskin covered grip with the standard copper wire wrap. A nice variant for the naval collector and one we have not seen before.  [ss]
