Item Code: 889-62

The blade on this sword is in fair condition. The surface is semi-bright with heavy scattered mottling throughout and moderate to heavy pitting in areas. One side of the ricasso is marked with “US” over inspector’s initials “J ?” and “1862” in three lines. Inspector’s second initial is not readable due to pitting. The opposite ricasso has a strong mark that reads “MANSFIELD & LAMB FORESTDALE, RI.” however the first letter “M’ and the “F” in FORESTDALE are faint. Edge is free of nicks but has been sharpened leaving filing marks behind. The leather washer under the counterguard is missing.

The hilt has a leather covered grip with twisted wire wrap. Wire is a rewrap and is loose and will need redone. The leather of the grip shows moderate wear. The brass pommel cap, knucklebow and counterguard with turned down finial have a nice light patina and nothing is loose.

Metal scabbard is complete with throat piece and both mounts and rings. The surface of the scabbard has been painted black and has moderate surface pitting. There are no major dings or dents.    [AD]
