Original, Model 1840 enlisted man’s cavalry saber complete with original metal scabbard. The ricasso bears the stampings of PDL and of Tiffany & Company. Enlisted sabers manufactured by P.D.L. (P. D. Luneschoss) of Prussia (Germany) were imported by retailers / assemblers such as New York’s Tiffany and Company.
This excellent example has beautifully bright, clean blade that is free from any mottling. The curved blade meas. approx. 35.50 inches long with a 27.50 inch long stopped fuller and 18.25 inch narrow fuller. The true edge of the blade has four small nicks scattered along its length. Obverse ricasso is strongly marked in two lines “TIFFANY & CO.” over “NEW-YORK.” The reverse ricasso has a strong but crooked “P.D.L.” within an oval. Original leather washer at the base of the ricasso is excellent.
The hilt is in outstanding condition and is tightly attached to the blade. The grip consist of a turned wooden handle wrapped with black bridle leather and encircled with the original twisted brass wire. Leather shows only the slightest wear. The pommel cap and guard are of the usual style found on the Model 1840 but instead of being made of brass they are of iron and have a nice untouched dark patina.
The undented iron scabbard exhibits a dark patina that matches the iron on the hilt. Both ring mounts and rings are present as is the throat. Large drag has four small carved tick marks on its upper spine as does the edge of the pommel cap. These are believed to be assembly marks. Scabbard presents a wonderful appearance.
This is an outstanding, clean, untouched version of a Tiffany & Co. enlisted man’s cavalry saber. [ad]
