This Model 1840 Light Artillery saber was made by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts in 1863. Ames was one of the most prolific sword makers in the United States and is considered one of the best.

The 32.25 inch curved blade has a very clean looking dusky appearance. The blade has aged gracefully and really displays well. The true edge has two or three very small nicks. The central stopped fuller runs approx. 25.75 inches. One side of the ricasso is lightly marked “AMES MFG. /CHICOPEE /MASS.” in three lines while the opposite side has “US / A.H.C. / 1863.”

The hilt has a brass Phrygian style pommel cap with a single knucklebow coming around to a thin guard ending in a circular quillon. The underside of the guard has its original leather washer in good condition. The grip is of wood and covered in leather with a twisted wire wrap. The leather shows light wear and the wire is tight. The knucklebow is stamped “A.H. C.” to match the inspector’s initials on the blade. The whole hilt has a nice rich patina.

The iron scabbard is undented and has a dark surface throughout with light pitting in areas especially on the drag. No inspector marks are visible on the drag. Scabbard is complete with both mounts and rings.  [ad]
