Item Code: E2655

Original Civil War Model 1850 foot officer’s sword in fair condition complete with its leather scabbard. Sword is unmarked and is no doubt an import item.

Etched blade has good etching but is the roughest part of the sword. The blade measures 30.50 inches long, 1.00 inch wide at the ricasso and has a single, unstopped fuller 20.00 inches long. On the flat of the obverse side of the blade starting just above the ricasso is an acid-etched design of foliates and a long thin stylized “US” followed by more foliates. The blade reverse also exhibits acid-etched design that features a spread-winged eagle with an “E PLURIBUS UNUM” riband in its beak followed by more foliate. Blade exhibits some of the original bright finish but the lower third exhibits moderate to very heavy pitting. The edge has several small nicks.

The brass hilt features a finely detailed, two-paneled guard and knucklebow. Hilt wears a pleasing mellow bronze patina. Very good condition original grips are tight and consist of a grooved, wooden center-swell handle wrapped in high quality, brown leather. Twisted brass wire is bound around the handle. Leather washer is missing. Brass pommel is decorated with ornate scrollwork of laurel leaves and features a tiered domed cap. Hilt is tight to the grips. Knuckle bow and domed pommel wear a dull bronze patina with just few scattered spots of dark oxidation. Some cleaning residue in lower areas of the hilt.

The original leather scabbard is a fair specimen complete with brass furniture. Entire leather body has heavy surface crazing. Two, plain, brass bands, adorned with a single tooling line on each band, support the suspension sword mounts and rings. Scabbard is free of any maker’s mark and the sword mounts, along with the brass drag, have acquired a mellow bronze patina. Drag is in very good condition with just normal dings and scratches from use but has separated from the scabbard. Scabbard above drag exhibits some glue residue.  [ad]
