Likely a relic of the Battle of Gettysburg, the blade of this musician’s sword is bright with only light scattered mottling and discolorations from age. The edge is nice and free of nicks but there are some minor scratches scattered along its length. The ricasso is marked on one side “MADE BY AMES MFG. CO. CHICOPEE, MASS.” Marking is readable. The opposite side is marked “US / ADK / 1863” in three lines and is strong. There is no leather washer at the base of the ricasso.

The hilt is made entirely of cast brass. There is a single knucklebow running from the pommel cap around to the base of the hilt where it acts as a counterguard and ends in a round button type quillon. The knucklebow is stamped with “ADK” to match the blade. The grip has a false wrapped wire cast into the brass with a smooth brass ferrule at top and bottom.

The leather scabbard has the correct brass throat and drag. The brass throat has a flange on one side for attaching to a leather baldric. The drag is marked with inspector’s initials of “AHC.” The leather body is in good condition with only light surface creases in the finish. The main seam running down the back of the scabbard is perfect.

This item is from the Peter Miller GAR Post 551 in York Springs, Pennsylvania. York Springs is located approx. 16 miles north of Gettysburg.  [ad]
