The drawn sword meas. approx. 38.75 inches long from point to pommel. The blade meas. approx. 33.00 inches long with a 19.50 inch long stopped wide fuller. The blade surface is attractively bright with only very light scattered mottling. There is an area near the point that is showing pinprick pitting. The edge has no visible nicks and none can be felt. Both sides of the blade are etched. The obverse has a spread-winged eagle perched on a riband that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” This is set in the midst of scrollwork decoration. The reverse side has a similar scrollwork design with a large “US” at center. Etching is strong. The ricasso is marked on the obverse with a circle of brass that contains the word “PROVED” with a fleur-de-lis. The opposite ricasso is marked “W. WALSCHEID / SOLINGEN. Complete leather washer is present where the guard and the blade meet.

The hilt has a ribbed grip covered in sharkskin with a thin twisted brass wire. The iron pommel cap is tiered. There is an iron backstrap that extends down the spine of the grip to an iron ferrule. The knuckle-bow begins narrow at the pommel cap and widens out into a basket shaped guard with several distinct branches. Three of the branches have cutout centers where they widen. On one side of the hilt the branches form a cutout spread-winged eagle with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” riband at top. Below the eagle are the letters “US.” On the opposite side of the hilt the guard is somewhat narrow with a single cut out. The whole thing ends in a wide quillon. The iron of the hilt has a mellow patina. The grip shows light wear.

The metal scabbard is turning brown. It does have some small dents and is complete with both mounts and rings. The throat is present as is the drag. Mounts and drag are free of any decoration.  [ad]
