The drawn saber meas. approx. 40.50 inches from point to pommel. The blade meas. approx. 34.75 inches with a central fuller that is 27.50 inches long. The surface of the blade is bright and very clean. There is no mottling visible and the edge has several very small nicks that can be felt more than seen. There are also some faint rub marks from drawing and re-sheathing the blade. The obverse ricasso is stamped with “US” over “G.W.C.” and “1864.” The reverse ricasso carries the makers mark in a scroll that reads “MADE BY / AMES MFG. CO.” The word “CHICOPEE” at bottom is very faint. The original leather washer is present under the counterguard and is complete.
The hilt has a leather covered grip with twisted wire wrap. The leather shows some wear but the twisted wire wrap is 100% intact. The brass pommel cap, knuckle bow and counterguard have a nice light patina and nothing is loose. Top of pommel is stamped with inspector’s initials “G.W.C.”
Metal scabbard is complete with throat and both mounts and rings. The surface of the scabbard has a lightly cleaned appearance and no dents. There are some areas of light mottling. Drag is stamped with inspector’s initials “A.D.K.”
Very nice example. [ad]
