This sword is an example of a non-regulation Foot Officer’s sword imported for use during the Civil War. This simple sword is complete with its steel scabbard.
The slightly curved steel blade measures 33” long, 1” width, and a 20” long stopped fuller. Blade is semi-bright with moderate areas of darker spotting. The blade is unengraved. Blade edge has no nicks. The ricasso is stamped “W. WALSSCHEID / SOLINGEN” and is a product of the Prussian firm of W. Walscheid of Solingen, Prussia (Germany). Obverse ricasso bears the embedded brass disc marked “PROVED”.
The large iron hilt features a quillion on top and three-branch guard. The hilt is strong and tight. Original read washer is intact. Original sharkskin covered grip is in fine condition and is wrapped with a double-twist of wire flanked by additional single strands of wire.
The scabbard is complete with throat, ring mounts, and drag, all tight and secure. Scabbard exhibits a smooth dark surface that is free of dents. Both small screws at the throat are present and secure.
A solid example of an imported sword and scabbard. [jet]
