This staff & field blade is a handsome, imported, non-regulation Civil War Federal staff officer’s sword with its metal scabbard, both in excellent original condition. A privately purchased import from the Prussian firm of Clauberg, blade has a clean, semi bright scheen and is finely etched in the quarter panel style with a Massachusetts State Seal paralleling the obverse side blade edge. Seal is flanked with a panoply of arms and a script ‘US’ near the etched ricasso. Reverse flat has a large spreadwinged eagle surrounded with military motifs and the maker’s stamp i.e. the Clauberg knight. Blade measures 32” long by 1” wide with a total length of 37½”. Blade is fitted with a non-regulation, British Pattern 1827 steel hilt with an attractively-cutout, spreadwinged eagle steel guard. Entire blade, with its light gray sheen retains a handsome and pleasing appearance but does display peppery pitting and few dark oxidation spots scattered overall. Blade back is marked ‘IRON PROOF’ and has a floral scroll etched along the surface. Blade edge is free of any nicks or cuts.
Hilt exhibits a wide-rolled quillon and a top backstrap with an integrated, tiered pommel cap that has a thin line of tooling that runs along its edges. Leather pad is missing at the ricasso. Grips are in original, very fine condition and consist of a wooden swelled handle tightly wrapped in dark sharkskin and bound with double-twisted steel wire. Backstrap has ears but no rivets to secure the strap to the grips. The imported metal scabbard is unmarked and in excellent condition overall. Specimen wears a dark gray patina overall with no dents or weak areas and has all iron mounts, rings with the typical German-style steel drag. Both bands and drag are tight. This original, imported Staff & Field officer’s blade is a wonderful example of a fine Civil War sword that would display nicely in any collection.
